Are Ductless Heat Pumps Green?

We think so; here’s why…

  1. Ductless heat pumps are among the most energy efficient heating and cooling systems available.  We believe energy efficiency is the cornerstone of Green. The long term energy use by a building or product typically matters more than other environmental considerations.  Ductless heat pumps are more than 3 times the efficiency of electric resistance heat (a.k.a “the old electric heat”— i.e., baseboard, wall heaters, ceiling cables, and electric furnaces).
  1. Ductless heat pumps use solar energy as the primary source of energy.  Ductless heat pumps are air-source heat pumps.  On a daily basis, solar energy warms the air “source” and that solar heat is “pumped” into your building by the heat pump using a refrigerant expansion and compression cycle.
  1. Ductless heat pumps use electricity.  Electricity powers the compressor, fans and controls in the refrigeration cycle that “pumps” heat.  In the Northwest, most of our electricity is generated with renewable hydro power.  Other renewable sources such as wind power and solar PV (photovoltaics) are increasing rapidly which suggests that ductless heat pumps could be part of a low-carbon renewable heating future.  This is precisely the carbon reduction strategy being implemented in Europe and Asia.  Here and now? A million homes in the Northwest with “the old electric heat” need The New Electric HeatTM.
  1. Ductless heat pumps use advanced refrigerant with zero ozone depletion potential.  Ductless heat pumps employ R410A refrigerant, a modern, high performance refrigerant blend that will not harm the ozone.  Special R410A techniques are used to ensure systems do not leak refrigerant.
  1. Ductless heat pumps provide increased air circulation and multi-stage filtering to improve indoor air quality.  Air quality is an environmental issue.  Indoor air quality (IAQ) is often worse than outdoor air quality.  Leading ductless heat pump manufacturers employ several types of IAQ strategies (not to mention you don’t have to breathe air pushed through ducts that need cleaning!).
  1. Ductless heat pumps save Green ($$$).  In this area of the country, ductless heat pumps provide heat for less.  Period.
